The ninth edition of RIVA 1920's "Light up your idea" competition 2024 was theme around outdoor furniture, with outdoor tables and benches included in the collection.​

​

​“Perceived value is customers’ evaluation of the merits of a product or service and its ability to meet their needs and expectations, especially in comparison with its peers,” Investopedia.

IMPERFECTIONS advocates through three distinct ‘voices’ for a paradigm shift in our perception of cosmetic imperfections. The product is pre-damaged, pre-chipped and scratched so as to add to its character and story, while also lowering its chance of being discarded due to its use and perceived loss of value over time - it is made to be imperfect.

 

“Unattractive products is that which has a significant natural aesthetic deviation from prototypical products, but has no damage that could affect functionalism,” - adapted for consumer durable goods from a study by Mookerjee et al, American Marketing Association.

 

With global municipal solid waste at two billion metric tons annually (Statista), we have to change our perceptions of what qualifies as waste and promote product longevity. The three distinct voices of IMPERFECTIONS - CHIP.SPECKLE.SCRATCH tie into RIVA 1920’s existing ecological ethos of using reclaimed wood, of allowing wood to age naturally under sunlight exposure and charring wood to protect and preserve it. Natural blemishes in salvaged wood are part of its brand philosophy and are highlighted in products.

 

A lowered embodied energy due to promoting the use of reclaimed wood, mechanical fitting, recycled steel and sustainable steel coatings of the bench range furthers RIVA 1920’s commitment to pursuing sustainability in each of its products.
